Nippers

FM Nippers is back for 2021/22

The FM Nippers will be back on 21st November 2021!

To find out how to join email nippers@fairymeadowslsc.com.

We decided to channel everything through our email address so, to get started, is really simple just send an email to nippers@fairymeadowslsc.com. The out of office function will automatically send back an email with all the links and instructions required to get registered. You will only need to put a heading of Registration or Rego in your email for the reply to bounce back.

Juniors, more commonly know as Nippers, is a foundational beginning for our club. Juniors covers the age groups from 5 to 15 years of age (need to be a minimum of 5 years of age as of October 1st to join), and is run between October and March.

We promote a fun and safe environment on the beach which is not only enjoyable for the Nipper, but the entire family as well. The program also mentors our youth into the cadets program before undertaking the Bronze Medallion and other senior awards. All children are encouraged to “have a go” at activities, but no one is forced to do anything that they aren’t comfortable with or don’t want to do.

Nippers does not teach swimming but surf and water skills. It is essential that your child is capable of undergoing a pool proficiency swim.

Children from Under 8 to Under 14’s are eligible to compete at Interclub and State carnivals provided they have passed the relevant proficiency for their Age Group. Carnival events include beach sprints and relays, beach flags, surf swims, board events and March Past.

At Fairy Meadow SLSC we encourage parents to play an active role in the Nippers program. There are many roles parents can fulfil in the surf club to help. Fairy Meadow SLSC would like to extend their thanks to our parents and volunteers – without you, there would be no nippers!

Juniors also incorporates our cadets (13 -15 year olds) who are able to complete their Surf Rescue certificate. This enables members to become a patrolling member, help with water safety and learn skills they can use when they become eligible for the Bronze Medallion.

Competing

Fairy Meadow SLSC is once again participating at carnivals and competitions especially at a nippers level. You don’t have to be a champion – just willing to give it a go! We encourage all of our nippers to think about doing carnivals this season. Good results are great, but our emphasis is on having a go!

Sometimes, if you’re not familiar with carnivals, it can seem a bit of a mystery and something that other ‘elite’ or  ‘seasoned’ nipper kids do – every nipper child can compete in carnivals (pending successful completion of proficiency swim – which we will help you with).

Please note, each club is required to provide people to help with the running of carnivals. Thus, parents of carnival kids will be required to assist (either as officials or water safety). This is not a big time commitment and can be easily worked out between parents.

Hopefully, the information below will help answer any questions you may have. If you have any further questions, please see our Juniors Leadership team – Glenn, Craig & Derek

What is a Carnival?

Carnivals are competitions where kids put into practice the skills they learn at nippers. The kids compete against kids from other clubs that are in the same age group. There are individual and team events. U8’s compete in flags, beach sprint, wade, wade relay and beach sprint relay. U9’s – U14’s compete in surf swim, board race, swim teams, board relay, sprint, flags, sprint relay. U11’s – U14’s also compete in iron-person events.
